The constitution of Denmark gives its citizens freedom to worship and practice any religion they choose. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark Lutheranism is the most practiced religion in Denmark. Almost 80% of Demark’s population are Lutherans. The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark follows Western Christianity (its members are also known as ‘Protestants’), whose faith is based on the teachings of Martin Luther, which is why it is called the Lutheran Church. The Evangelical Lutheran Church is administered by a minister from the government of Denmark, while parliament has the highest legislative authority over the Church. There are about 12 territories under the Danish National Church, which are headed by the Bishop. Overall there are almost 2500 priests nominated by the Church to perform various religious rites. Financially, the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Denmark is supported by government subsidiaries and membership fees which is voluntarily paid by members. Roman Catholic Church The Roman Catholic Church has been in Denmark since the 10th century when Denmark first changed from its early Norse religion into a Christian state. Yet later, when Denmark accepted the teachings of Martin Luther, Catholicism was practiced by less than 5% of the population and that percentage has remained steady even today. The Roman Catholic Church is a member of a global community and is respectively led by the Pope. There is only one administrative territory of this church in Denmark with a single Bishop at Copenhagen. Islam Nearby 2% of the Danish population practices the Islamic religion. There are several different types of Muslim communities in Denmark. Almost the entire Muslim population in Denmark consists of immigrants from Islamic countries all over the world. Because the constitution of Denmark allows freedom to practice any religion, the Muslim community is allowed to build mosques and follow their religious practice without many limitations. The first mosque built in Denmark dates back to the year 1967. Judaism Judaism is believed to have existed in Denmark for several hundred years. Yet today, Judaism is a minority religion in Denmark, with Jews representing even less than one percent of the total population. The main Jewish synagogue in Denmark is the Central Synagogue located in Copenhagen. Baha’i faith Though practiced by a very small group, practitioners of the Baha’i faith can be found in Denmark. |
